Developed by the IPUMS Global Health Project at the Institute of Social Research and Data Innovation (University of Minnesota), with financial support from the U.S. Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institution of Child Health and Human Development, IPUMS MICS is now live.

A five-year partnership between UNICEF and the IPUMS team, established in 2018, for the harmonization of MICS data furnishes the data required for the construction of IPUMS MICS. The harmonized data will also be used for the population of MICS Tabulator—our online data platform currently in development. The MICS Tabulator will facilitate effortless analysis and visual presentation of MICS findings, and is expected to go live next year.

This initial launch of IPUMS MICS includes over 800 variables from 202 MICS surveys conducted between 2005 and 2020, representing 88 countries.

IPUMS MICS offers a user-friendly interface for effortless exploration of variables and topics by survey, allowing easy access to Stata code for harmonizing 800+ MICS variables across various samples and survey rounds, consistent geography for reliable comparisons, and extensive online documentation for each variable - all accessible with a simple click, providing a comprehensive and streamlined experience.

Registered MICS data users can simply select variables and surveys for harmonization on the IPUMS MICS platform, accessing the original, unchanged MICS datasets and harmonization scripts on the UNICEF MICS website. The integration of these platforms provides a user-friendly and smooth experience, enhancing the interaction with MICS data.

IPUMS MICS is easy to use, minimizes unintentional errors in research and is available to all registered MICS data users at no cost. We encourage everyone, from researchers to policymakers, to visit the IPUMS MICS platform and explore the vast possibilities it offers. To find out more about this new tool, explore the IPUMS MICS website or check out the IPUMS MICS User Guide and FAQ. Additional help is available by contacting ipumsatumn.edu (ipums[at]umn[dot]edu)
